Brian Bomeisler's Sketching Class In The Metropolitan Museum Of Art

“Draw as you see,

feeling hides in lines”

I really like Brain Bomeisler's classes. Now I want to tell about Sketching Class.

At the sketching class we used pen or pencil. I never used pen for sketches, and I never drew statues. It is fun and it is good way of training.

Main skills are the same: the perception of relationships, known as proportions and perspective, the perception of edges, called "line" or contour, the perception of lights and shadows and composition.

Some of my first sketches were terrible (I used a pencil) – there were wrong composition and proportions, slack and illegible lines, abundance of extraneous details, etc...

We went to the Chinese Garden Court. I felt horrible. I can't do anything right.

I began to use a pen, my fear of the pen could be seen in the sketches. All my classmates went to draw statues by now, but I was still trying to draw another pagoda. I didn't have time, I was in a hurry and I forgot all about my fears. And what happened? The sketch turned out to be a reasonably good drawing.

When I went to drawing Asian statues I began to feel the fear again. I tried to do better than with the previous ones. And what had happened? Lines immediately became slack and illegible, abundance of extraneous details reappeared, etc...

Class was nearing its end. I didn't have time, I had to hurry up and finish the sketch in three minutes. And what was the result? My best sketch of the day. I really draw better when I'm limited in time and can't hinder myself.

– You need to think about that, – said Brain. He was right. He usually is.
